Dreaming of transforming your patio into a bright, comfortable sunroom you can enjoy from early spring to late fall — or even year-round? You’re not alone. Many homeowners across Southwestern Ontario are looking for ways to expand their living space without a full home addition.
The good news? In many cases, it’s absolutely possible.
The key factor? Your foundation.
The Foundation: The Make-or-Break Factor
Sunrooms are primarily made of glass and are typically attached directly to your home. While they feel light and airy, they are engineered structures that require proper structural support.
Without a suitable foundation, a sunroom can:
-
- Heave during freeze-thaw cycles
- Shift or settle unevenly
- Develop structural or performance issues over time
In Ontario’s climate, foundation integrity isn’t optional — it’s essential.

Can Your Existing Deck Support a Sunroom?
This is one of the most common questions we receive.
If your patio is currently a wood deck, the first step is determining whether it was built to handle the additional weight and structural requirements of a sunroom system.
In Southwestern Ontario, installations by Four Seasons Sunrooms & Additions require one of the following:
-
- A concrete footing extending at least four feet below grade, or
- A properly engineered helical pile system designed to meet required bearing capacity
Many older decks were built using deck blocks or 4”x4” posts with minimal concrete support. While these systems may be sufficient for a standard deck, they are typically not designed to support a sunroom structure safely and long-term.
How to Tell If Your Deck Is Suitable
Here are a few ways to evaluate your existing deck:
- Check the deck’s history
Was it built with a permit? Municipal records can confirm what type of foundation was installed.
Under the Ontario Building Code, decks more than two feet above grade require a permit. However, not all decks were constructed with proper approvals or inspections.
2. Inspect the Piers
-
- Concrete piers are usually installed with the top 4–6 inches above grade. This keeps the structure dry, allows for proper attachment of posts and beams, and ensures good drainage.
- For a sunroom, piers are often 10 inches in diameter at the top, widening to 16 inches at the bottom. If your deck isn’t permitted, an inspector might require digging near a pier to confirm it was built properly to code
3. Examine the Framing
A structurally sound sunroom floor usually requires:
-
- Minimum 2”x8” floor joists
- Closer spacing than the standard 16” on center
Smaller joists or older framing systems may not meet current structural requirements.
How We Upgrade a Concrete Slab for a Sunroom
When building on concrete, we often install a grade beam foundation system to ensure long-term stability.
This process typically includes:
-
- Cutting out the existing slab along the sunroom perimeter
- Installing helical piles or concrete piers at engineered locations
- Placing pressure-treated beams on the new footings
- Waterproofing and capping beams in aluminum to integrate with the sunroom system
- Adding rigid foam insulation around the perimeter to prevent heaving and frost movement
While this requires additional preparation upfront, it ensures your sunroom is structurally sound, stable, and built to last in Ontario’s climate.
